“If I’m going to be your date for the night, kinda feels like I-I should probably know your name first,” Evan says, angling himself so he blocks the sight of the women more when he sees the man’s eyes stray toward them once again. It forces those pretty eyes to switch their gaze back to him.
“Eddie.”
“How long ago was the break-up?”
There’s a pause long enough after the question Evan isn’t sure Eddie’s going to answer. “About a month,” he finally says, somewhat reluctantly, like this isn’t a topic he wants to be discussing.
“Who broke up with who?” Evan asks anyway. He isn’t sure how pretending to be someone’s date works exactly, since he’s never actually done it, but it feels like it would be best to get all the relevant facts on the table first.
“She cheated on me and wasn’t good at hiding it,” Eddie sighs, suddenly looking anywhere but at Evan. “I’ll let you fill in the blanks.”
“And you specifically pointed her out, drawing attention to us… why?”
“What is this? Twenty questions?” Eddie’s frown isn’t nearly as attractive as his smile. “I already told her I was waiting for a date when she saw me. She said we should come join them once you got here.”
“Hey,” Evan says, holding up his hands in a show of surrender or peace, not wanting this to take a turn for the worse. “You want me to pretend to be your date? I’m gonna need a little background so I know what I’m walking into before I say yes.”
“At least you’re thinking about it.” Eddie gives him a small smile that’s not nearly as breathtaking as the one before, but Evan can’t help being affected by it all the same.
“Well, free drinks. Who can pass that up?” Evan grins, trying to lighten the mood since he’s the one who brought it crashing down. Then he jerks his head in the direction of the women and asks, “Do you want to join them?”
“I… I don’t know. Maybe?” Eddie shrugs. “Honestly, I’m not sure.”
“I’m no expert, seeing as this would be my first time as a pretend date, but seems like the best way to make her jealous is to give her a front row seat.” Evan throws caution to the wind and leans forward, drastically closing the distance between them. “Can I kiss you?”
“Uh…,” Eddie’s eyes are locked on Evan’s lips, which seems like a yes, just not the kind Evan’s looking for. It takes Eddie a moment to say, “Yeah?”
“Yeah?” Evan repeats, unable to control his smile and satisfaction at how the tables have turned. Who knew one simple question was all that was needed?
“Yes.”
Eddie’s barely finished saying the word when Evan kisses him, slow and sweet with just a little bit of tongue. Pulling back, he’s pleased to see Eddie’s face is flushed.
“Why don’t we go say hi and let her know we’re- we’re taking our date back to my place?” Evan suggests, resisting the urge to kiss Eddie again.
“Shouldn’t I know your name then?” Eddie asks, a grin lighting up his face once more.
The sight of it makes Evan give in to temptation. This kiss is more hungry than sweet, and when he pulls away, his breathing is a little ragged as he says, “It’s Evan.”
