The sun has long since come up, forcing Blaire to retreat to her underground bedroom with Benny until night falls again. Satiated with blood, she’s more than content to curl up beside him in bed, enjoying the feel of his fingers running through her hair. It’s been a while since she felt like this, at peace and full of love for someone else that wasn’t tainted by jealousy or manipulation.

“What are you thinking about?” Benny asks, pulling Blaire out of the sleepy haze she’d fallen into.

It takes her a moment to realize her thoughts had begun to drift to Zoe and she wonders if something in the way she held herself had alerted him. That’s one path her mind doesn’t need to go down again, and he knows it.

“Zoe,” Blaire answers honestly, tipping her face up to meet his as he turns to look at her. She can still taste blood on his lips. “She wasn’t always like that,” she whispers.

“I know.”

There’s no judgement in his words, no insecurity at knowing she’d been thinking of someone she’d been in love with once while they were in bed together. But she’d known from the moment she’d seen him Benny was different. Better than anyone she’d ever known.

“Do you want to tell me more about her?” he asks, kissing her gently on the forehead as though to reassure her this is fine.

Blaire doesn’t think she’d be fine if he wanted to talk about a former lover. Jealousy isn’t something she dealt with well, and she isn’t sure if she’d always been that way or if she learned it from Zoe after so many years spent together.

“She used to make me feel safe. I’ve never had anyone love me like that before.”

“You make me feel safe,” Benny tells her, moving so he can kiss her lips again. “And I love you.”

Blaire reaches up a hand to touch his cheek. Looking at him helps ease the ache in her chest over losing Zoe. Even with how much it hurts, she doesn’t regret her part in that death. If she had to do it again, Blaire would still stand against Zoe and Victor. Because Benny is worth every ounce of pain she feels.

She hopes her kiss and her touch are able to convey to him exactly how she feels. Just in case they don’t, Blaire pulls back just enough to whisper, “I love you, too.”
